For a long time, in the history of art,
women were the subject of works of art
rather than artists themselves. As from 1880,
the role of the female has changed from
purely a model to that of both
producer and model.
Just like photography, which still had
to prove itself as a creative medium,
women had to prove that they too
could claim the rightful status of an artist. Therefore, it is not amazing that
their new role in art was most articulate
These days women are accepted and
successful in their role as artists. Still
self-portraits of women are much less common.
